The United States And The Civil War - 1565 Words
The lives that we live and the freedoms that we have today may be considered great for the majority of our population. This could be attributed to the history of the United States and the civil war. What would our country be like if the Confederacy won the war? How would our lives be impacted and what freedoms would we have today if that were the case? What if the major Union victories were actually Confederate victories? The following is just an idea of what potentially could have happened if this were the case. There was intense fighting that occurred throughout the United and Confederate States of America ranging from Texas and as far north as Pennsylvania as well as Naval battles Atlantic Ocean and a few in the Gulf of Mexico. Coupledâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦If the Confederate Army had been in control, the slaves would have eventually been freed due to the Emancipation Proclamation established by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. The battle of Fort Donelson took place in Tennessee during February of 1862. The significance of this battle was that Fort Donelson was considered to be the heart of the Confederacy. Fort Donelson was a Confederate built fortress used to control the Cumberland River. Fort Donelson was quickly over-run by General Ulysses S. Grant and Union Forces. If the fighting at Fort Donelson were reversed, the Union would not be able to use the fort as a staging area and would not allow them to advance the front lines in their favor. With the Confederate Army occupying Fort Donelson, they would be able to have a central point to bring casualties, make plans for future battles in the area, and house their soldiers allowing for higher morale and a better rested fighting force. Remaining in control of Fort Donelson would also allow for the Confederate to have better vantage points for potential Union attacks. Virginia was the location of the Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Appomattox Courthouse, which were the first and last battles of the American Civil War. Virginia was also the home of the Confederate capital, Richmond. During this time people doubted the existence of God and what the Church has to say about the laws and such. Anorexia Nervosa (1542 words) Essay Anorexia NervosaIn American society women are given the message starting from a very young agethat in order to be successful and happy, they must be thin. Eating disordersare on the rise, it is not surprising given the value which society places onbeing thin. Television and magazine advertising that show the image of glamorousand thin model are everywhere. Thousands of teenage girls are starvingthemselves daily in an effort to attain what the fashion industry considers tobe the ideal figure. An average female model weighs 23% less than therecommended weight for a woman. Maintaining a weight 20% below your expectedbody weight fits the criteria for the emotional eating disorder known asanorexia (Pirke Ploog, 1984). According to medical weight standards, mostmodels fit into the category of being anorexic (Garfinkle Garner, 1990). Physicians now believe that anorexia has existed for at least 300 years (Pirke Ploog, 1984). It was however only about one hundred years ago thatProfessor Ernest Lasegue of the University of Paris finally identified anorexiaas an illness (Pirke Ploog, 1984). The term anorexia nervosaliterally means nervous lose of appetite. Most researchers and physicians agreethat the number of patients with this life threatening disease is increasing atan alarming rate. Garfinkle Garner define anorexia as ?an emotionaldisorder characterized by an intense fear of becoming obese, lack of self-esteemand distorted body image which results in self-induced starvation (1990). Thedevelopment of this disease generally peaks between the age of 14 to 18 but canoccur later in life and is not uncommon to see it in women in to their early 40`s. Recent estimates suggest that 1% of American girls between this age span willdevelop anorexia to some degree (Garfinkle Garner, 1990). It has alsopropagated in many college campuses, and it is spreading. Studies have shownthat nearly 20% of college women may suffer from anorexia or bulimia (Pirke Ploog, 1984). The disease develops slowly over a period of months to yearsduring which the sufferer changes her eating patterns to a very restricted diet. As stated previously above, an anorexic is diagnosed by having a body weight 20%below the expected body weight of a healthy person at the same age and height ofthe eating disorder patient. The anorexic may often becomes frightened ofgaining weight and even of food itself. The patient may feel fat, even thoughtheir body weight is well below the normal weight for their height. Some mayeven feel they do not deserve pleasure out of life and will deprive themselvesof situations offering pleasure, including eating. This fear becomes sodifficult to manage that the sufferer will gradually isolate themselves fromother people and social activities. This happens so the sufferer can continuethe exhausting anorexic behaviors. Although the mortality rate is high (30% ofanorexics will eventually die from the disease), approximately one third areable overcome the disease with psychiatric help (Pirke Ploog, 1984). Warning signs to look for in someone you suspect of anorexia. Physical signs areintolerance of cold due to the absence of the body`s natural insulator (fat),dizziness and fainting spells, dry skin, loss of muscle, and the most obvious, aweight loss of about fifteen percent. There are also behavioral changes in aperson when they becomes anorexic including restricted food intake, odd foodrituals, an increased fear of food, hyperactivity, dressing in layers, andregular weighing. Some odd food rituals include things like cuttingfood into small pieces, counting bites or even talking to their food. Anorexicsare not repelled or revolted by food, in fact their minds are often dominated bythoughts of food. While the exact cause of anorexia is still unknown, acombination of psychological, environmental, and physiological factors isassociated with the development of this disorder (Cove, 1998). Insomnia Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that plagues millions of people around the globe by not allowing them to sleep. Its severity can range between a couple of days to a couple of months, and is curable in most cases. In any given year, about one-third of all adults suffer from insomnia (Hendrickson 1). Insomnia itself is not a disease, but a symptom of an underlying mental or physical condition of the person. There is not a strict definition for insomnia, but it could be narrowed down to: a person not being able to sleep, having difficulty falling to sleep, or having trouble staying asleep. Medications are available for the treatment of insomnia, but they should not be used on a regular basis. Some thirty-five to forty-five percent of people witness serious bouts of insomnia at some point in their lives, but of that percentage, fewer than twenty-three percent actually seek treatment for the problem (Brogan 2). 1 There are a wide variety of causes for insomnia, but most experts estimate that three fourths of all cases are psychological (Insomnia 1). One-third to half of all patients with chronic insomnia has an underlying psychiatric illness. Another ten to fifteen percent have a drug or alcohol abuse problem (Hendrickson 1). One of the most common cause of insomnia is stress, which can be defined as mental or physical tension, as well as the inability to relax (Hauri 92). Anxiety and is also a common cause common. After having high anxiety, many people recover their normal sleep rhythm spontaneously, but other become depressed and develop chronic insomnia (Winter 1). Some insomniacs have trouble sleeping due to an injury or near death experience that happened because they were drowsy. One sleepless night can cause a chain reaction of depression and exhaustion because the next night you might be worried about sleeping and will soon develop chronic insomnia. Many insomniacs try to hard to go to sleep. 2 They lie awake with thoughts buzzing around in their head making it difficult to fall asleep. Many people who experience insomnia become frustrated, making it even more difficult to fall asleep. After a while insomniacs begin to anticipate bad nights, which makes the condition worse. Of the physical causes, alcohol, cigarettes, and caffeine are the most common. Alcohol may make you fall asleep faster since it is a depressant, but it makes you sleep less soundly and you awake more frequently during the night. Nicotine and caffeine are both stimulants that cause you not to feel sleepy, thus causing you not to sleep well. Caffeine is commonly found in coffee, sodas, and tea (Appendix B). Since caffeine can stay in your body for up to twenty hours, a cup of coffee in the morning or a soda at lunch may greatly affect your sleeping. Caffeine is also found in chocolate and most chocolate products (Appendix A). Eliminating caffeine from your diet could solve your sleep problem even if your insomnia set in without increasing your caffeine intake. 3 Going without caffeine in your system will give you more restful sleep and you will feel more energized with less sleep (albert 88). It may seem logical to have a large dinner late in the evening since a heavy meal makes you drowsy, but it makes your digestive system work hard, which can keep you up at night (Hauri 120). Many insomniacs do not realize that sleep is a twenty four-hour system. What you do during your sleep affects your daytime, and what you do during the day affects your sleep. Your sleeping life and your waking life are one, so many factors during the day, and many factors during the night can cause insomnia. There are many ways to tell if you or someone you know is suffering from insomnia. The symptoms can be broken into two main groups: daytime symptoms, and nighttime symptoms. The daytime symptoms of insomnia and sleep deprivation are similar. The daytime symptoms of insomnia are drowsiness or fatigue, and the difficulty to concentrate. Ever since I was little and in gymnastics he would always tell me, ââ¬Å"If you give it all you have and dedicate yourself to something, you are bound to achieve anything you put your mind to.â⬠Ever since then, that motivation has been branded into my mindset. Although during the beginning of high school I did come to a crossroads. Freshman year was the biggest struggle for me academically. I had a hard time second semester mainly because of family issues. There was a lot of hostility in my house at this time, which caused me to lose some focus in school. I had a difficult time this semester in Biology Honors, which I received a final grade of a D. Despite the fact that I earned that grade, I still enjoy the subject of Biology immensely. I look forward to studying it in my future without the distractions. Furthermore, I believe I will be more successful than other applicants because my passion for science. Science engages me more than any other subject. Also, there is always so much more to learn about that field of study. To thrive in something you have to put your heart into it, and without heart you will never be successful. I have a lot of desire to learn about subjects I enjoy, and to further my education. Learning new things is extremely enthralling for me. Education is infinite. You are never done learning in life, and there are constantly new discoveries and innovations to study. I am anticipating the new things, and experiences I will be exposed to at Illinois State University. Illinois State University seems like a great place for me study and I look forward to the opportunity to attend there next year.

Concert essays
Concert essays The whole time the audience was quiet and just sat, watched and listened. There was one person behind me that kept tapping to the beat of the music, but stopped after a while. That was very distracting because I would hear the tapping right in my ear and couldn't concentrate on the orchestra. The concert consisted of music by Hadyn, Tschaikovsky and Mozart. The orchestra played Hadyn's symphony no. 94 and scenes from the Nutcracker. Along with Mozart's Toy Symphony. Basically the concert was focused on holiday music and at the end they had a sing-along for the whole audience to join in. The orchestra consisted of mainly the string family, like violins, cello, viola. Also the woodwind family, which was flutes and clarinet. They also played with the drums, cymbals, tamborine and triangle. The music was very peaceful and relaxing. It was played soft, but at times would get louder. All the instrumentalists were nsync and altogether. There was not one note off that I could realize. It looked like they all enjoyed being up there and playing for the audience. There was one man I was watching who seemed to have a hard job. He was playing the tamborine and triangle. In every song he had to make sure he played at the exact time he was supposed to, otherwise the whole song would be ruined. That was impressive because it takes a lot of practice and listening skills to play it right on time. I enjoyed going to this concert because it was sort of uplifting. I just blanked everything out of my head and just concentrated on the peaceful music playing. The best part was when they played parts of the Nutcracker. Those songs are some of my favorite and to just hear them live was an experience. The Nutcracker songs make me want to hear more and I never want them to end. When I first heard I had to go to a classical concert I thought to myself how boring. But after experiencing it I really enjoyed it and would definitely attend another one. ...

Eventually his marriage ends in divorce, but later, when he begins to come to terms with his illness, he and his wife are reunited. However, unlike, the 1950's, when Nash became ill, today, medical science has made it possible for this genetic illness to be controlled in some cases such as Nash's without medication. Two factors help to make this possible. The first is the fact that if the affected individual receives medical help early enough, including cognitive therapy, he or she has a better chance of overcoming the disease. The movie is truthful in showing how, after Nash's acceptance of his illness, he is able to recognize that the voices are not real and to quit letting them run his life. The second is the fact that has become evident to scientists that the disease of paranoid schizophrenia improves in latter life. This is even truer if the afflicted has been treated early on. In the respect of normalcy, the movie presents a distorted view of Nash's life regarding his compensation for the disease in maturity. While he did go on to achieve greatness as a mathematician, there are scientists who believe that this was not in spite of his illness, but because of it. Nash believed this himself as he stated in a radio broadcast in which he was interviewed. For adults people different types of programs are held by famous Omani and Arab intellectual. Like discussion and debate on earthly and environmental topics. There are also different artistic, educational workshop, parades, seminars, poetry readings, literary gatherings and exhibition. This festival is very welcome by children. Because of this festival they find enormous happiness. This is the huge opportunity for them to enjoy and fulfill their wishes. In many cultures today, this challenge has evolved into an intricate courting process that often involves buying the woman flowers, gifts, and meals to persuade her to have sex. Another device that a man might use to seduce a woman is poetry. In the English language, the use of poetry to seduce women may be traced back to the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Cavalier poets such as Robert Herrick, John Donne, and Andrew Marvell embrace this method of seduction, carefully constructing verse with the intent to satisfy their carnal desires. Each of these men rely upon several literary tools to manipulate women to fornicate with them. Among the more prominent techniques is the use of logical rhetoric to reason that engagement in sex is the best choice of action. Another device that appears frequently in early seduction poetry is the imperative statement, which simultaneously prompts the woman to take action and endows her with a sense of control over the situation. Functioning in a similar manner, interrogative statements suggest the obvious truth of what the poet speaks while forcing the woman to consider his request. By using a first person plural narrative voice to address the woman whom he hopes to woo, the poet makes her associate herself with him in thought, thereby allowing for an easier transition for personal involvement. Book Report on Dear America Series- Diary of Hattie Campbell Essay
This book, written by Kristiana Gregory, is about a thirteen year old girl from Pennsylvania, Hattie Campbell. On her birthday, she was given a diary by her mother and her Aunt June. In the first entry, she mentions her Uncle Miltonââ¬â¢s death three days ago while fixing her familyââ¬â¢s barn and his funeral the eve of her birthday. At the funeral, the coffin fell out of their cart and was washed into the nearby river. Her father tried to save it but was almost sucked into the paddles of a riverboat. As a sign of apology, the riverboat captain agreed to give Mr Campbell and his family free tickets on his riverboat to go anywhere they wanted. That night, he announced that the family would be heading to the untamed West, at that time occupied by the Indians who were known to be violent. Mrs Campbell was very angry and initiated a ââ¬Å"cold warâ⬠with her husband. Two days later, she relents and agrees to head out West. On the way out West, the family met a young adult named Tall Joe, who eventually becomes the captain of their group. Throughout the long trip, they lost many partners as their oxen died or they were shot by Indians. One day, Hattie and her friend, Pepper, are out playing and happened to stumble across what they thought were wild carrots and parsnips. They took some back as it was their turn to cook for the group. Back at camp, they got around their chores and started cooking. A little girl, Cassia, looked longingly at the ââ¬Å"carrots and parsnipsâ⬠and takes two bites before running off to play. Later, as they were rolling out pastry, they heard screams. They went in the direction of the screams and were horrified to find Pepperââ¬â¢s twin brother, Wade, and some of his friends lying on the ground, jaws clenched so tightly that nobody could pour charcoal and water into their systems to absorb the poison. In the end all of them except Wade died. The women were able to pour charcoal into his mouth. Hattieââ¬â¢s father then went to the tent where the kitchen was. When he saw the ââ¬Å"carrots and parsnipsâ⬠, he asked Hattie to cut some for him. He put it on the edge of his tongue and spat it out immediately. He said that it was actually water hemlock, a poisonous plant which could kill a horse if it just ate one. A man would die from a bite. They immediately remembered Cassia. They found her limp body and buried her together with the boys. The priest prayed over their graves. The next day, they called all the children and drew on the dirt to show them the difference between water hemlock and wild carrots and parsnips. Eventually, after twenty six months on the road, they reach their destination, Oregon. Along the way the accompanying Aunt June gave birth to a daughter, River Ann Valentine. The family, Aunt June and her husband settled in Oregon and became one of the first pioneers to make it to their destinations.

People with wisdom are wise and able to make a good judgment. However, is there really such a thing as #masterofallwisdom? What is thisà wisdom? Wisdom is one of the four cardinal virtues. Along with justice, courage, and moderation, wisdom or prudence include an individual capacity to deal with moral and practical affairs in life or having both Wisdom of God and Wisdom of the World. The wisdom of God as we know it is learned from religious teachings while the latter are practical wisdom associated with philosophy or opinions of great men in history. The ability to distinguish right from wrong, however, is not entirely wisdom but acting upon learned knowledge and experience. LEARNING MORAL VALUES IN COLLEGE MOVIES This particular knowledge according to the scientific dimension of human development includes emotional and social intelligence, critical thinking, and other high order mental activities that are integrated into wisdom. The study shows that the quality of human wisdom is greatly influenced by education, technology, health, and age. Older people who have lived long enough, seen more and learned enough normally have more wisdom and able to face major life changes. Masters of all wisdom are likely those with long experience and vast knowledge of the world around us. They are aging individuals who love, fear and honor God. They do not get rich by doing wrong but feel joy and happiness from doing right. Cultivating the Right Wisdom in School ââ¬Å"A prudent man is a man of wisdomâ⬠(Ken Barker). This man according to Christian teaching does not act according to the wisdom of the world but according to the will of God. Individual wisdom, therefore, varies according to his spiritual conviction and relevance of life events to this belief. Philosophical wisdom, on the other hand, regarded education as a pathway to wisdom thus only those with knowledge are wise and capable of making sound decisions. This is because knowledge is gained not only from life experience but also through education and training. Teaching, for instance, is not only about passing knowledge but transmitting wisdom to students. Wisdom acquired in normal education is transmitted through text and teacherââ¬â¢s classroom teaching aimed at initiating studentsââ¬â¢ responses, reflection, and critical thinking. Only through many years of education that we can gain wisdom or the power to face all challenges in life. Moreover, it is through education that we learned to make good use of our knowledge and become useful later in life. It is the wisdom that will help us do things right and in the best possible way of doing it. Classroom teachers often interest their students so they can assimilate knowledge effectively and get voluntary responses without stress or force. Practical active wisdom or mentally cultivated sense of values is one of the most important goals of education. In fact, evoking life wisdom and beauty through comprehension of the art, science, religion, and morality is an important teacherââ¬â¢s function. Through helpful knowledge, this function enhanced ordinary everyday life and in the process develops the appreciation of facts and their relevance to existing practical and religious values.

Those ways of life were ranching and farming. Most people tend to believe that farming was a much better way of life, mostly due to ties of family and community life. These ways of life were in ways similar but also different in many aspects. Cattle ranching was a way of life that took a lot of land to sustain a number of cattle. This land was used fairly lightly and used creek beds as they were, which is a process called extensive farming. It took about ten to fifteen acres for every cow/calf unit that a rancher owned, which meant the more land that a person controlled the more cattle they could raise. The vast amounts of land controlled by ranchers led to the isolation of the families that ran them. Some ranches were hundreds of miles from the next place of settlement. Upper class ranchers were able to leave the ranch in the winter, but lower and middle class ranchers had to live there year round. This meant that kids had to be home-schooled. This led to a lot of the families not being able to get out and see anything other than their families and anyone else that happened to live on the ranch. Agriculture on the Great Plains was a very intense form of farming, this meant that farmers used smaller amounts of land heavily. Farmers also had to reroute the paths of creeks to irrigate their crops because of the semi-arid conditions. Farming was more of a family based operation in that as soon as children were old enough to help they did. Everyone that was able to help on the farm did. Farming also led to the development of towns because farmers needed a place to go and sell their crops that they had grown. At the age of nineteen he first experienced LSD which lead him to experimenting more with marijuana and LSD. At the age of twenty one he was arrested for possession of marijuana. At the age of 21 at a family dinner he started showing signs of schizophrenia which was aggravated by drug abuse. At the age of twenty two Herbert Mullin began treatment as a resident of the community drug abuse prevention center in Santa Cruz. Later that year Herbert Mullin was committed to the psychiatric ward of San Luis Obispo County General Hospital because with is mental disorder he was a danger to others, himself and gravely disabled. A month later he was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. He was not one that cared to take his medication. In the summer of 1970 he was diagnosed as a schizo-affective schizophrenia. In 1970 he began blaming his parents for his illness and in result took them out of his will. Herbert killed people believing that if he started to kill people it will lessen the chances of another hurricane happening in his area. He did this by only killing random Caucasians from the age of 4 to 72. He bought his materials to the crime scene such as a gun, knife, and baseball bat. He was a psychotic visionary. Mullin had no developmental problems according to Erikson. He went through all the stages where he experience love and finding out what personality he wants to embrace. This is the point and time when he realizes that he is a bisexual. The motivation behind it seems to be the fact that he was born the day that Albert Einstein died and the anniversary of San Francisco Earthquake. Freud would have said that he is anticathexis because he gives off the sense that his ego is blocking the socially unacceptable needs of id. Mullin for example when he found out that his target moved he went after him and killed him as planned. He was a very traditional man and he didnââ¬â¢t like anything that had to do with the ââ¬Å"white manâ⬠. He thought it was nonsense to get a whitemanââ¬â¢s education and he wouldnââ¬â¢t provide the money that was necessary to get Mark through school. Mark was helped through this situation by his Mother who was the person who wanted Mark so desperately to attend school. She decided to go against Markââ¬â¢s Father and send Mark to school. She then had to get a job which was illegal for her to do so because she didnââ¬â¢t have the required pass from the South African government. With the little money that his mother made and some money that his grandmother gave him he was à able to pay for his schooling or at least some of it. He often was without the required materials like a school uniform and books. This then resulted in Mark being beaten at school. These beatings became so intense and often that Mark thought about dropping out of school. His Mother helped him decide that he should stay in school because she knew that an education was the only way out of their life of poverty. Through the support of Markââ¬â¢s Mother and grandmother Mark found success in school. He almost always was ranked in the top of his class and received scholarships to continue on in school. At the end of Markââ¬â¢s schooling he receives a job offering in South Africa for him to work as a à manger of the company, he decides to accept this job for the time being because his family needed the money to send his brothers and sisters to school. These factors shape a childââ¬â¢s moral development, and concept of right and wrong. School-age children are able to make decisions related to moral and ethical issues. Parents may cater to their toddler when they are misbehaving, giving them more attention when they are bad than when they are good. This make the toddler believe that behaving badly gets their parents attention. Parents need to remember to reward good behavior, and to emphasize rewards for acceptable behavior and minimizing attention for unwanted behavior. Parents may not have firm and established rules, making it confusing for the toddler to distinguish right from wrong. Peers or inappropriate content on television can negatively influence preschoolerââ¬â¢s values and beliefs. Parents may have a poor morals and value system themselves, inadvertently teaching their preschoolers the same behaviors. School-age children may bend to peer pressure to gain the acceptance of their peers. School-Age children may cheat due a desire to win, or pressure from their parents and peers to be great. When the nurse is caring for a child, the nurse must remember that they are essentially caring for the child and the parent (Jarvis, 2012). When dealing the toddler and preschooler, the nurse should visit with the parent first, letting the child size the nurse up. For the toddler and the preschooler, the parent will be providing most, if not all of the health history. When beginning the physical assessment on the child, move slow and approach them slowly while seeming happy and unthreatening. The nurse should allow the child to hold instruments, like a stethoscope, during the physical exam to help them feel like they are involved in their own care. Having parents there add security and support for children, and also can help with the ease of assessing theà child without them realizing that they are being assessed. With children of each stage of development, the nurse must be cognizant of verbal and non-verbal cues provided by the child. The nurse should be mindful that there could be cultural and/or spiritual considerations to take into account, like when undressing a child of the opposite sex. The nurse needs to ensure that the caregiver and the child feel comfortable. With both children and adults, assessment should start with least invasive and progress leaving most invasive last. School-Age children should be assed like either children or adults depending on their developmental age. Adult assessment can be more direct than that of a child. Learning Strategies Essay
Learning strategies determine the approach for achieving the learning objectives and are included in the pre-instructional activities, information presentation, learner activities, testing, and follow-through. The strategies are usually tied to the needs and interests of students to enhance learning and are based on many types of learning styles (Ekwensi, Moranski, &Townsend-Sweet, 2006). Due to the Learning Strategies are used to achieve the ââ¬Å"learning objectivesâ⬠that teachers want their learners to use when they are acquiring a second language, it is important to be conscious about the factor that influence the choice of learning strategies. What are those factors? There is a range of factors that affect strategy choice, including vocabulary learning strategies. According to Ellis (1994: 540 545) there are two broad categories of such factors: INDIVIDUAL LEARNER DIFFERENCES * AGE: Young children tend to use strategies in task specific manner, whereas older ones use generalized and more sophisticated strategies. * LEARNING STRATEGY: According to Oxford (1989), general approach to language learning determines the choice of L2 learning strategies. For example analytic learners prefer strategies such as contrastive analysis and discerning words and phrases, whereas global students use strategies to find meaning: guessing, scanning, predicting, etc. * PERSONALITY TYPE: Ehrman (1990) suggests that each personality type is associated with ââ¬Ëassetsââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëliabilitiesââ¬â¢ where language learning is concerned. For example, extroverts are assigned to have willingness to take risks (an asset) but with dependency on external stimulation and interaction (a liability). Another finding mentioned by Erhman was that introverts showed greater use of strategies involving searching for and communicating meaning than did extroverts. * MOTIVATION: Some researches show that ââ¬Å"highly motivated learners used more strategies relating to formal practice, functional practice, general study, and conversation/input elicitation than poorly motivated learnersâ⬠(Ellis 1994:542). The particular reason for studying the language: motivational orientation, especially as related to career field was also important in the choice of strategies. SITUATIONAL AND SOCIAL FACTORS * GENDER: On the basis of Oxford and Nyikos (1989) and Erhman (1990) research, females reported greater overall strategy use than males in many studies. Although sometimes males surpassed females in the use of a particular strategy. * TYPE OF TASK: The specification of the task may help learners in using particular strategies, but cannot predetermine the actual strategies that will be used. * Learning setting: Students (Ellis 1994) have pointed out a number of differences in the usage of learning strategies in a classroom and in more natural setting. Studies of classroom strategies by Chamot (1988) showed that social and affective strategies were used infrequently by adults, excluding ââ¬Ëquestioning for clarificationââ¬â¢. However, Wong-Filmore (1976;1979) reported frequent use of social strategies by young learners in a play situation. CONCLUSION Once we as teachers know the factors that influence in our studentââ¬â¢s decisions to choose a specific Learning Strategy, it will be easier to guide them in the correct way to be autonomous, students whom can take charge of their own learning (Nation, 2001:222) and gain independence and self-direction. Defining the essays Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness is considered among the best English works of literature. It is a story of a man named Marlow who journeys up the Congo River while working for a trading company. There Marlow encounters an English ivory trader that has hypnotized a group of natives to be under his control. The sequence of events that follows reveals Conrads views on the exploitation of the Congo. To best understand Conrads Heart of Darkness, we must closely look at the scene of Marlow taking Kurtz out of the wilderness and their interactions up until Kurtzs death. It is in this scene that Conrad describes the indecency of human existence that Marlow has come to see in the wilderness, and explains that the heart of darkness is not the corruption itself, but the ability to recognize the evil that lies within the heart. The scene begins with Marlow describing their departure from the rain forest, explaining that The brown current ran swiftly out of the heart of darkness, bearing us down toward the sea...and Kurtzs life was running swiftly, too, ebbing, ebbing, out of his heart into the sea of inexorable time (62). Just as Marlow and his men are being carried out of the heart of darkness of the wilderness, so is Kurtzs soul leaving his own darkness. The language suggests a the involuntariness of both situations, as the current is responsible for the boats action, and Kurtzs life is compared to a river, ebbing, ebbing into the sea. They are both, however, running swiftly, as is fleeing by the quickest means possible. This shows the power with which Kurtzs heart and the Congo are contaminated. The fact that Kurtzs death is the only way for Kurtz to depart from his heart suggests that Marlow is also dying by leaving the Congo. However, even though such an expectation exists, as the reader might expect, a clear level of differentiation exists between the level and use of fantasy that is leveraged and these two novels which are written nearly 50 years apart.4 With regards to The Secret Garden, a sense of fantasy is immediately conveyed to the reader due to the fact that a fantastical representation of an exotic life is presented to the reader. The protagonist, Mary Lennox, is defined as a girl who grew up in the lap of luxury and far off India.5 The description and definition of the luxuries and carefree lifestyle that she lived while there helps the reader to understand the sense of warning and mystique to which she greets the gray and uninviting steps of northern England.
